Family Systems Therapy
As a family therapist, I gain a better understanding of the individual through the lens of his or her relationships within the family. This might mean an exploration of that person’s childhood experiences within his or her family of origin, as well as exploring current relationships with spouse, children, in-laws, etc. Sometimes “family” can even be a constructed family of friends if the biological family is not very involved. These primary relationships can make a great impact on one’s well-being, so the whole family system is taken into consideration, even when a solo client comes through my door. Sometimes these family members are invited for a visit to help us with our goals and progress. I’ve found it to be tremendously helpful when a whole family gathers for an extended session, which can benefit several family members at once!
